<미국 18대 대통령> '율리시스 그랜트'는 미국 50달러 지폐에는 그의 초상화가 그려져 있다.
미국 역사상 대통령의 최고의 자서전 중 하나다.
링컨 암살 후, 앤드루 존슨 부통령이 대통령직을 승계하였고, 그랜트는 국가군통수 대원수 겸 육군참모총장이 되어있었다.
하지만, 존슨은 의회의 탄핵을 받았고 그랜트는 당시 여당인 공화당의 눈길을 끌어 1868년 선거에서 제18대 대통령으로 당선되었다. 그는 37개 주 중 26개 주 (3개 주는 선거권이 없었고, 8개 주는 호레이쇼 시무어가 가져갔다.)에서 이겼다.
그러나 그랜트는 대통령이 되자 빈부격차와 인종차별 등 극심한 문제에 시달리게 되었고,
설상가상으로 정부 각료들과 그의 비서들이 공공연히 뇌물을 주고받는 사태와 대규모 금융 스캔들이 발생하였다. 이로 인해 전쟁영웅인 그의 이미지는 완전히 추락하였으나, 1872년의 선거에서 재선되어 많은 국민들이 의아해 할 정도였다. 당시 그는 37개 주 중 31개 주에서 이겼다.

<센추리 매거진> 지에 남북 전쟁 회고담을 쓰기 시작해 자서전을 준비했다.
그랜트는 사망 직전에 자서전을 완성했고 그 자서전은 미국 군 역사상 최고의 자서전 중 하나로 평가되며 친구 마크 트웨인과 출판 계약을 맺어 당시 화폐로 50만 달러의 저작권료를 받았다.
